Cleaning and Prevention

Don’t rush when you brush!

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the 2/2 rule: brush for 2 minutes in the morning and 2 minutes at night with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste

Visit your dentist once in 6 months

The rule of thumb for how often you should go to the dentist is twice a year or every 6 months.  A reasonable goal is to visit the dentist at least once a year for an oral health checkup

Don’t Forget to Floss!

The good news is that it is never too late to start flossing, whatever is your age. Keeping your teeth in top condition is crucial to your dental health and hygiene.

Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth. These procedures help improve oral health and function. Common dental restorations include crowns, bridges and implants.

Cosmetic Procedures

Smile enhancement can have dramatic results on your overall appearance; even the smallest step can boost your confidence, self-esteem, and make you want to smile more. With modern advances in dentistry, cosmetic procedures can range from a basic color correction to replacing missing teeth, and everything in between.

  • Composite / White fillings
  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Crown
  • Implant Restorations
  • Teeth Whitening

Endodontic Treatments and Procedures

  • Root canal treatment
  • Endodontic retreatment
  • Endodontic surgery
  • Traumatic dental injuries

Frequently Asked Dental Questions

Many people have questions about their dental care, but are afraid to ask.  Asking questions is an important part of your dental visit and overall healthcare. It allows us to cater to your individual problems (and fears) and face them head-on. Here are some of the most common questions we receive:

How often should I get my teeth professionally clean?

Prevention is always better than a cure, and a professional clean is definitely a preventative measure of many oral health problems.

It is recommended that you visit the Dentist a minimum of 2 times a year. We recommend a routine dental check-up every 6 months, but those with a high risk of gum disease or tooth decay may need to visit the dentist every 3 months.

How much does a checkup cost?

We work with most insurance companies to help cover costs for your treatment.  If you need specialized work, we can determine how much your insurance will cover, before you get started.

Do I need Dental X-Rays?

We recommend a full set of dental X-rays early into the doctor-patient relationship. X-rays help us monitor any changes that could be happening in your teeth between appointments. Most adult patients have bitewing X-rays every year. We provide X-rays right here in our office.

I Have Sensitive Teeth. How Do I Fix This?

You can try using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth such as Sensodyne.  Try rubbing a little toothpaste into the sensitive area when going to bed as it helps protect the surface.

You should try to avoid strongly acidic foods or drinks and wait at least an hour after eating before brushing as this could cause even more sensitivity. Grinding your teeth can also increase sensitivity and a mouth guard may be necessary.

If the pain continues, speak to our dental team and we may be able to offer additional care to reduce your symptoms.

How Do I Practice Good Oral Hygiene at Home?

  • Brush twice a day for 2-3 mins each time
  • Oral Hygiene
  • Floss daily
  • Use mouthwash daily
  • Use products that contain fluoride
  • Eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables while limiting your intake of high sugar snacks
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid tobacco

Testimonials

I’ve been to numerous dental offices in the past and have always dreaded going to an appointment,. I was often scared and lost about procedures that were being done to me, which is why I was surprised at my first visit to Dr. Shakin and Dr. Sheren’s office.

From the beginning, Dr Shakin and her team made me feel comfortable, as if I was always a patient they’d been taking care of for years. Everything was clearly explained to me and I was able to ask questions and feel comfortable. I highly recommend Dr. Shakin and Dr. Sheren and their team/office. I’m so glad I found this office/them.

With East Islip Dental, I finally found a dental group that I like and will return to. The doctors and hygienists have a gentle touch and kind demeanor. The front desk staff is both professional and friendly. Two thumbs up!

Elenore Walsh

I’m deathly afraid of dentists, but this office goes out of its way to make me comfortable.  I’m now on a regular routine and my teeth are healthier for it!
